Agence des Aires Marines Protégées (French Marine Protected Areas Agency): enhancing the value of marine iconography with DAM Keepeek

The Agence des Aires Marines Protégées (AAMP) is a national public body dedicated to protecting the marine environment. The Agency's communications department wanted to equip itself with a tool for managing and making available its media (photos, videos, sounds). This online media library is Keepeek' s Digital Asset Management software.

The need is mainly internal; users of the media library are primarily AAMP staff (including marine nature parks). It is also open to an external audience, with a system of profiles and identification: journalists and institutional partners.

The importance of image in the Agence des aires marines protégées communications approach

The Agency's communication is based on a strong audiovisual policy. AAMP's visual and audio resources provide access to a little-known marine environment that is difficult to reach.

Photos and videos are powerful vehicles for raising awareness of the challenges facing the marine environment: showing the richness of ecosystems, but also their fragility, revealing the beauty of underwater landscapes and the diversity of maritime activities.

The Agency's communication campaigns, whether print or online, are all about visuals. This multimedia collection is therefore strategic.

An organized iconographic collection

The main themes of the Agence des Aires Marines Protégées's work are used to classify the photo library:

  • Natural heritage
  • Cultural heritage
  • Natural marine parks
  • Agency
  • Marine protected areas
  • Water quality
  • Scientific campaigns
  • Ambience and landscape

These themes are broken down for each marine nature park. This homogeneous structure is intended to ensure the coherence of the iconographic organization.

Images from the seabed in France and overseas

The teams contributing to the photo library can be far apart. In fact, the AAMP is present on all of France's maritime coasts and overseas territories (Mayotte, Martinique, French Polynesia, New Caledonia), with a variety of time zones. To meet the needs of all our agents, we needed to set upa web-based media library that could be accessed anytime, anywhere.

The tool is also designed to enable each marine nature park to manage its own fund locally. The database is also enriched by numerous videos, produced in particular with Océanopolis, one of the Agency's long-standing partners. The consistency of processes and the management of the database are guaranteed by a documentalist at the Brest head office. Workflows to control the input and output of the photo library ensure the integrity of the database and respect for image rights.

Support from Keepeek

Keepeek was involved very early on in the project, providing comprehensive documentary advice. The collaboration between the AAMP and Keepeek teams enabled us to put in place a balanced documentary structure, allowing everyone to find their way around. Work on the documentary language enabled us to find the right words to describe the visuals. The communication officers at head office and in each marine nature park have been trained in the application. Efforts to personalize the distribution site highlight the documentary collection and guarantee the graphic consistency of the media library with all the Agency's websites.
