Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer: building a powerful communications strategy with DAM

Marianne Cossin has been in charge of communications at SNSM for 7 years. She is responsible for social networks, the creation and distribution of podcasts and the photo library.

Last March, Marianne took part in the Salon E-marketing with Keepeek CEO Thomas Larzilliere. On this occasion, they co-hosted a workshop on the importance of Digital Asset Management in building an effective communications strategy.

In this testimonial, find out how the association manages to collect, manage and distribute the many media it uses to carry out its communication campaigns and appeals for donations.

Context

Before it had a Digital Asset Management tool, the SNSM was equipped with a shared network drive, which contained all the media created and distributed by volunteers, the press, communications teams and so on. However, following a cyber-attack, the drive was hacked and all data lost. What followed was a long search and assembly process to try and recover the various media resources. After several months' work on this project, 2 major issues emerged for SNSM: securing the media library, and sharing the resources and knowledge base linked to the association's various assets.

SNSM communications

The SNSM's communication campaigns focus on two main areas: fund-raising, which takes place in summer and winter, to renew equipment and maintain the fleet , and prevention campaigns, with an institutional aim.

To put these brand-building campaigns into practice and appeal for donations more easily, the association uses a large number of multimedia resources, distributed in a multi-channel fashion according to the targets to be reached:

  • Press relations: in the form of posts (to promote your actions, highlight your events and report the latest news);
  • Print: small-format content for volunteers;
  • Radio: talks on prevention and fund-raising;
  • Podcasts: one giving advice for young people, the other sharing rescue stories for the general public;
  • Magazines : articles presenting the association's activities and news;
  • Newsletters: web content for widespread distribution ;
  • Events: in particular the Salon Nautique and the Journée Nationale des Sauveteurs en Mer;
  • Website: for advice, articles, testimonials, events...

All these very comprehensive media consume a large quantity of media, most of which is collected from local structures. It was therefore essential to convince them of the importance of contributing to the centralization of photos and videos , by providing them with a tool that was simple, quick to use and, above all, secure. The ultimate goal: to bring together all existing resources that can be used by the SNSM in a single location.

Why a Digital Asset Management solution?

The SNSM therefore decided to equip itself with a Digital Asset Management solution to meet several challenges:

  • Security: gather your resources in a secure space where data can be retrieved at any time;
  • Preservation: having a space dedicated to these resources, with a history ;
  • Saving time : giving access to the various users of these media so that they can retrieve them independently (volunteers, press, communications department, other departments, partners, etc.);
  • Participation: enabling volunteers to make their media easily available;
  • Rights: make sure a photo or video has the right credits, or that SNSM and its partners have the right to use it.

The Keepeek solution was quickly adopted for several reasons:

  • Team availability;
  • A simple media search system;
  • Secure servers ;
  • Support during the project made all the difference (the Keepeek teams quickly grasped the SNSM's issues and challenges);
  • An indexing service for over 1,000 media, with a dedicated documentalist who took the time to understand the vocabulary and workings of the structure.

Today, the SNSM's DAM contains over 6,000 media, with around 2,000 more in the pipeline.
